This year, we are thrilled to announce Nicole George, Mentor in Disability Employment Services (DES), as the recipient of our 2024 Individual of the Year Award.
Nicole’s unwavering dedication, innovative approach, and hands-on support have transformed the lives of participants, especially through her work with Hotel Etico in the Blue Mountains, a pioneering enterprise providing employment and independent living opportunities for young people with disability.
A Partnership Built on Heart and Vision
In April 2024, Nicole began a remarkable partnership with Hotel Etico, driven by her belief in the power of tailored opportunities to empower individuals with disability to achieve their independence goals. While the partnership presented challenges, Nicole faced each with resilience and determination, fully embodying the Enterprising Heart values of innovation, courage, and care.
Nicole took a hands-on approach, visiting the hotel weekly to support participants during their shifts and working closely with the employer. This level of engagement allowed her to quickly identify and implement necessary modifications to ensure the success of the program.
Advocacy That Changes Lives
One standout moment from Nicole’s journey was her handling of a complex situation involving a participant struggling to communicate their needs to both their employer and their NDIS provider. With communication breaking down and tensions rising, Nicole brought all parties together for an open discussion.
By prioritising the participant’s best interests and fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding, Nicole navigated the conflict with bravery and clarity. Her ability to advocate for participants, many of whom couldn’t advocate for themselves, has been nothing short of transformative.
Balancing Compassion and Excellence
Nicole’s achievements are even more impressive when you consider her dedication to supporting seven other participants training at the hotel, in addition to managing her broader caseload. Through it all, she has remained steadfast in her commitment to creating lasting positive change in the lives of her participants.
