Program Overview

What is the Self-Employment Assistance program?

The Self-Employment Assistance program can help you turn your business idea or existing small business into a viable business. The program allows you to choose the level of support that meets your needs and the needs of your small business.  

Self-Employment Assistance program replaced the New Business Assistance with NEIS program in July 2022.

Who can participate in the Self-Employment Assistance program?

To be eligible you must:  

  • be at least 15 years of age (a person must be 18 years of age to access Small Business Coaching)  
  • be: an Australian citizen, or the holder of a permanent visa, or a nominated Visa Holder (including a New Zealand Special Category Visa, Temporary Protection Visa Holder and a Safe Haven Visa Holder)  
  • not be an undischarged bankrupt  
  • meet any additional eligibility criteria specific to the Service(s) you they have chosen as some services available through Self-Employment Assistance will also have additional eligibility criteria. For example, to access Small Business Coaching you must have an eligible business idea or existing business. This means your business idea or existing business must:  
  • be either a new business or a micro-business (up to 4 employees) at risk of not operating commercially  
  • be assessed as viable by your Self-Employment Assistance provider  
  • have an independent business structure  
  • be lawful and capable of withstanding public scrutiny  
  • be established, located, and operated solely within Australia  
  • be structured so you will maintain a controlling interest over the business through your time accessing the Services 

Can I still participate in the Self-Employment Assistance program if I am not on Centrelink?

Yes, you can still participate in the Self-Employment Assistance program even if you are not receiving Centrelink benefits. The program is available to a wide range of individuals who meet the eligibility criteria, which include being unemployed or underemployed and interested in starting or growing your own business. Centrelink status is not a requirement for participation.

Training 

What training offerings are there?

  • Small Business Workshop (Online delivery, 5 day duration, 20 PBAS points) 

  • Micro Business Skill Set (BSBSS00102) (8 week duration) 

  • Certificate III in Entrepreneurship and New Business (BSB30220) (6 month duration) 

  • Certificate IV in Entrepreneurship and New Business (BSB40320) (12 month duration) 

 

Is the training face-to-face or online?

The small business training is currently conducted live online by trainers in a collaborative and engaging setting. 

When are the intakes?

We have an intake every first Monday of each month. 

What do I need to join training?

  • Proof of Identity: Valid USI - if you do not have your USI number, please call 1300 857 536 between 8:30am and 6:30pm (AEDT), Monday to Friday (excluding national and South Australian public holidays). Alternatively, you can create one here.

  • Technical Requirements: Laptop or Desktop Computer with stable internet, Zoom (free to download), and a Webcam. 

Can I defer my training?

Yes, if circumstances arise which make it difficult to complete training, you can defer.

Business Coaching

What does Business Coaching involve?

Small Business Coaching involves individualised business mentoring for up to 12 months.  

Over the course of a year, you’ll be connected to a business mentor who will keep in touch with you to give you guidance, coaching and other business support. 

You can also receive a $330 (including GST) reimbursement to assist with your eligible business costs (such as business insurance). If you’re eligible, you can also receive a Self-Employment Allowance for up to 39 weeks and Self-Employment Rental Assistance for up to 26 weeks.

When can I do business coaching?

You can access coaching when you have:  

  • a Workforce Australia approved business plan 
  • All the required documents, such as insurance 
  • Your business actively up and running 
  • When your Small Business Coaching Agreement has been signed  

How long does business coaching run for?

Small Business Coaching gives you 12 months of personalised mentoring and support to help you start and run your small business.

Other Services

Business Health Check

You can receive a 3-hour, one-on-one Business Health Check for your existing small business at no cost to you. Our Asuria Business Mentors will assess how your small business is currently running and help you find ways to improve your business. 

Business Advice Session

You can receive two Business Advice Sessions every 12 months at no cost to you.  

Business Advice Sessions offer personalised advice relating to your business idea or existing business. The 1-hour sessions are run by our expert Business Mentors, who will help you achieve your business goals.

Business Plan Development

A business plan helps new and existing business owners focus on the steps to business success. 

You'll get access to the tools and support you need to develop an effective business plan. If you already have a plan, your provider can give you feedback and ensure it's right for your business goals.

Self-Employment Allowance

How much can I get?

If eligible, you can receive the equivalent of the single, 22 or over, no children rate of the Job Seeker Payment, paid fortnightly.  

How do I get the Self-Employment Allowance?

Most income support recipients will automatically transfer to the Self-Employment Allowance. If you are not receiving income support, you must make a claim for support prior to commencing coaching.

How long can I receive the Self-Employment Allowance?

39 weeks from the date you commence coaching. 

Does the Self-Employment Assistance Program provide funding for businesses?

No. The program does not provide any funding, financial support or capital for businesses.

Mutual Obligation Requirements

How will Self-Employment Assistance program affect my Mutual Obligation Requirements?

Exploring Self-Employment Workshops  

  • Workshop participants who have a points requirement as part of their Mutual Obligation Requirements are awarded 20 points per week while participating in a workshop. If you are undertaking these workshops you will need to look for work and complete the minimum job search requirement to meet your monthly points requirement.  

 Small Business Training  

  • Participating in Small Business Training will meet your Mutual Obligation Requirements for up to 8 weeks. Participating in Small Business Training will earn you 25 points per week and you are not required to complete the minimum job search as part of your points requirement. 

Do I still have to look for jobs?

Depending on the specific service you sign up for, you may still be required to meet your existing Mutual Obligation Requirements such as looking for work or attending appointments. Be sure to check with your provider for specific requirements.
