How to get that job through resilience and persistence

3 minute read

The life-changing decision to move to a new country for a fresh start presents various social and cultural challenges.

For Ibrahim and Imran, who both made a move to Australia several years ago, the challenges of adjusting to a new way of life and learning a different language were immense. Both men needed employment and were referred to PeoplePlus Lakemba to assist them in realising their career goals.

Since moving to Australia, Ibrahim had been unemployed for over three years and found it extremely difficult to find a steady job. When he began to work with our team in Lakemba, we recommended that he enrol in several programs available through AETS (Australian Employment and Training Solutions) which included Resilience Training Workshops and the Get That Job Skill Set.

Through the Resilience Training Workshops, Ibrahim was able to learn all the vital workplace essentials to improve his strengths, positivity, mental toughness, mindset, and character. Ibrahim then completed the Get That Job Skill Set which provides the essential skills and confidence to succeed during the job interview process.

Imran had never worked in Australia and was initially receiving assistance through Disability Employment Services (DES ) before he was placed into the jobactive program to find employment. When we started serving Imran from the PeoplePlus Lakemba Centre, we ensured that he got access to our Metro Assist / Settlement Services which is designed to help people like Imran to settle into his new country and in understanding the everyday essentials of Australian life.

It was Imran’s ambition to both have a job and to work in a role that would enable him to further career opportunities. He partnered with our Case Manager, Tony Barchini and Recruitment Manager, Tanya Shaheen who both worked to help him to gain a better understanding of discovering where he was best suited in regards to the various employment options and pathways available for him.

After working persistently with our Lakemba team which included close consultation, marketing sessions, and training programs, Ibrahim and Imran were referred to available positions as Process Workers with Hutech Metal Products. Both men are now six months into their new roles, and perform general tasks on the production floor which includes the operation of machinery, steel cutting, and basic steel fixing.

As an equal opportunity employer, Hutech Metal Products has over 45 years of experience specialising in Sheet Metal Manufacturing, Fabrication and Engineering trade. Geoff Croucher, Production Manager at Hutech believes that both Ibrahim and Imran have shown considerable improvement since commencing work at Hutech’s busy production workshop.

“Ibrahim has shown improvement in his work and ability, we have supported him with work clothes and ongoing support especially in the beginning of his employment.

“Imran is a model employee and if we come across any candidates like him we would be happy to meet them,” said Geoff.

The team at PeoplePlus would like to congratulate Ibrahim and Imran on this fantastic achievement and wish you continued success in your career.
