Healing through art: the creative therapy group empowering Asuria’s participants

5 minute read

At Asuria, our dedicated teams empower participants through a range of avenues including mentoring towards employment, arranging employment opportunities, volunteering and training pathways, or providing comprehensive wellbeing services.

Every day Asuria staff members display acts of compassion, ingenuity and leadership, that represent and uphold the Enterprising Heart pillars we are built on.

We would like to introduce you to Kasey Hathaway, a Wellbeing Specialist within our Allied Health team, and share the impactful work she is doing to uphold one of our value pillars; to be innovative and create possibilities.

In her role as a Wellbeing Specialist, Kasey meets with clients to support and build their emotional wellbeing. Additionally, she supports Asuria teams by joining site meetings and guiding Mentors in supporting participants overcome barriers to employment, increase resilience, and build confidence.

Kasey is particularly passionate about working with our First Nations participants to improve their overall wellbeing and empower them to lead fulfilling lives, a sentiment and mission shared by all Asuria staff. To address this, Kasey developed an innovative art and narrative therapy group tailored to the needs of our First Nations participants, which provides a yarning space for them to address barriers, build social connections and share their stories.

Under Kasey’s guidance, participants are encouraged to develop healthy strategies to recognise and navigate emotions through the power of storytelling. They reflect on their personal experiences in an open, shared discussion, making use of a mixture of spoken words, drawing and non-verbal communication.

During group sessions, Kasey leads exercises to allow participants to explore their feelings and identify emotional triggers. Attendees may be asked to associate colours with specific emotions or express their identity through collage and imagery. These activities offer a safe space that has contributed to transformational healing.

The art and therapy group has created an environment that encourages personal development, resilience, and acceptance of self and others. After joining art and therapy sessions, participants feel better equipped to find work, pursue volunteering and community activities, and enrol in training or education.

The art and narrative therapy group has since expanded to other locations, with sessions now being run in Asuria’s Albury and Maroubra sites and plans set to launch the same in North Western Tasmania in the coming months. Kasey also ran the Wellbeing Space at Asuria Ballarat’s Youth Jobs Fest, giving young people a space to share their thoughts and engage in art therapy exercises.

Deborah Flower, National Wellbeing Manager, shared her thoughts on Kasey’s commitment towards her participants, “Kasey's strength is her ability to connect and build rapport with our participants. She assists with removing fears or stigma of mental health and other barriers by normalising the client's experience. She loves helping clients tell their story and find their own solutions.”
